Cydia is an open source software installer created by saurik that uses the Debian APT system for package management. It is found in nearly every mainstream jailbreak tool from iPhone OS 2.0 to iOS 14.8.1 (with the notable exception of Chimera, Odyssey and Taurine, which use Sileo as their main package manager).

Some older jailbreak tools install smaller apps (such as Loader.app for greenpois0n or blackra1n.app for blackra1n and limera1n) to download and install Cydia directly on the device instead of having it installed at the same time as jailbreaking, making for a lighter initial download and jailbreak.

Cydia's latest stable version is 1.1.30, which supports all devices (except Apple TVs and Apple Watches) running iPhone OS 2.0 - iOS 12.4. The translations package (cydia-lproj), however, hasn't been updated since 13 June 2014 (1.1.12).

As a frontend for APT, Cydia allows users to add/remove repositories where they can install packages. By default, Cydia includes the third party repos BigBoss, ModMyi, and ZodTTD/MacCiti, as well as its own Telesphoreo repo. It additionally included repo666.ultrasn0w.com until 1.1.19.

darwin-arm packages are intended for use on iPhone OS 1.x. Releases for iPhone OS 1.x were released simultaneously with those for iPhone OS 2.x for some time, until 1.x updates ceased with 1.0.2473-64 on 17 July 2008.

1.1.30 15 February 2017 Release notes

Cydia 1.1.30 fixes an issue where people could not install new purchases.

  • Before deciding to work on a 1.1.29 release, I had been doing some "simple" refactoring for part of a new project, and I did not notice that I broke the ability to install a commercial/paid package that had been purchased but was not already installed. This has been fixed.
